A Saturday of service with Marathon Petroleum Los Angeles Refinery
Marathon Petroleum Los Angeles Refinery and Sharefest have a tradition of investing in schools in the harbor area, and we continued that important progress during a service day at Broad Avenue Elementary School in Wilmington this summer.
The company’s Technicians Department, along with their friends and families, joined Principal Ryan Cowan and the Sharefest team for a day of planting, mural painting and beautification for the school.
“It means a great deal for Marathon to be out here on a Saturday morning, where they’re rolling up their sleeves and giving back to this community,” said Sharefest Executive Director Chad Mayer.
Among the volunteers helping that weekend were members of Marathon’s Summer Youth Program.

This wasn’t the first time Sharefest worked with Broad Avenue Elementary. The project continued a series of murals across the school grounds and in the auditorium, adding brightness and color for students returning to school in the fall.
“The big thing is what it does for kids, because this is an elementary school and I want it to look like an elementary school,” said Principal Cowan. “I want it to be inviting and look fun and festive, and all of these graphics and colors do that for them.”
