Marathon Petroleum Los Angeles Refinery is a longtime supporter of the school system in their home city of Carson, and that community engagement continued this July as the company’s Summer Youth Program partnered with Sharefest for a beautification project at Catskill Avenue Elementary School.
More than 30 students from more than five high schools around Southern California were at the event, helping paint murals and clean up gardens around the campus.
One of the students, Brian, also worked with Sharefest the previous year and was involved in a similar project at Curtiss Middle School. “I was born and raised here in Carson, California,” he said. “It feels good being a part of this community event.”
Marathon Public Affairs Representative Nancy Pérez added, “It’s really important for us to be able to give back to the community where we operate and where we live, and one big component is this program that we’ve been doing for over 30 years.”
It was a chance for young people to get involved in volunteer work, for Marathon to continue investing in the future of Carson, and for students at Catskill Elementary to have a vibrant learning environment over the next school year.

Sharefest and Marathon were joined by LAUSD Board Member Tanya Ortiz Franklin, LAUSD Regional South Director Frank Davies, and District 4 Councilmember Arleen Rojas.
“Marathon has been in the City of Carson for decades and decades,” Rojas said. “For them to be here and share and take care of the community, not just at the school but all over Carson, that’s their way of thanking us — and that’s our way of saying, ‘Thank you for being our partners in the community.’”
